While 85% of adults say they can swim, less than half have the basic skills necessary to save their lives in the water.

We often assume that by the time we hit our teens or adulthood, the window for learning to swim has closed. We may think our skills are "good enough", or we may avoid water situations altogether. The reality is much different—and a lot more urgent. According to the American Red Cross, while 85% of Americans claim they can swim, less than half can actually perform basic skills that could save their life.

The many benefits of water skills in adulthood

The most important benefit of leveling up your basic swimming skills is that it greatly reduces the risk of drowning, which claims about 4,500 lives every year in the U.S. Teens and adults can also enjoy other unique benefits from this type of movement, including:

  • Low-Impact Fitness: Swimming works every major muscle group while supporting your body weight, making it a perfect way to stay active if you suffer from joint pain or chronic injuries.

  • Mental Health: The rhythmic nature of swimming can help you reduce stress and lower cortisol.

  • Family Safety: When adults learn to swim, they model safe behavior for the kids in their lives.

  • New Opportunities: Gaining swimming skills is a great way to conquer aquaphobia or the fear of water, a condition that affects about half of adults in the U.S. It opens the door to triathlons, snorkeling, boating, and anxiety-free beach vacations.
